Fourth graders will all be participating in the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project entitled Everyday Mathematics. As the separate brochure explains, the curriculum is based on spiral levels of understanding which is a different approach than was previously used. Students will work in class in a Math Journal, which will not be allowed to leave the classroom. Student Reference Books (SRBs) can be taken home, but must be returned to school EVERY DAY. Often, manipulatives or games will be used to help reinforce math concepts. Students will be given the opportunity to work with partners or in groups, and the use of calculators is encouraged to help with the discovery process. Calculators may also be used on some homework assignments. Periodic assessments will be given at the end of each theme.
